The final stretch of the year can feel like a sprint. Deadlines, performance reviews, budget planning, and the pressure to “finish strong” can quickly turn into exhaustion if we’re not careful.
But what if this season didn’t have to be about doing more — and instead focused on finishing well?
Here are a few simple ways to keep your energy (and your team’s) steady as the year winds down.
Focus on What Matters Most
Now’s the time to prioritize. Ask yourself (and your team):
- What must be completed before year-end?
- What can wait until January?
- What’s no longer worth our energy?
Here’s a little food for thought. I once led a team that produced a monthly report — one that required hours of data gathering, formatting, and review. Each month, we’d send it to a long distribution list, but I was never sure anyone actually read it.
During a particularly busy season, I told my team to skip the report that month so we could focus on more pressing work. The funny thing? No one noticed. We never produced the report again, and it didn’t impact a thing.
It was a great reminder: just because we’ve always done something doesn’t mean it still adds value. Finishing strong isn’t about doing more — it’s about doing what truly matters.
Protect Time for Deep Work
It’s easy to get caught in nonstop meetings this time of year. Block time on your calendar for focused work — and encourage your team to do the same. A little structure helps everyone stay calm, creative, and clear-headed.
If you’re a leader, model it. When people see you setting healthy boundaries, they feel permission to do the same.
Show Appreciation Along the Way
When everyone’s hustling to the finish line, take a moment to pause and say thank you. Recognition energizes people far more than another meeting invite. A heartfelt note, a quick shout-out in a team huddle, or even a simple “I see how hard you’re working” goes a long way.
Gratitude fuels motivation — and it’s contagious.
Encourage Rest and Real Breaks
Before the holidays, remind your team (and yourself!) that rest is productive. Taking time off to recharge leads to sharper thinking and better collaboration in the new year.
Set boundaries early about communication while you’re out. Empower others to make decisions in your absence so the team can keep moving — without you feeling tethered to your inbox.
Reflect and Reset
Instead of rushing into next year’s goals, create a moment of reflection:
- What did we accomplish this year?
- What did we learn?
- What are we proud of?
Celebrate progress — not just completion. Reflection helps you start the new year grounded, focused, and inspired.
Finish Strong and Savor the Season
The end of the year isn’t just a finish line. It’s an opportunity to pause, appreciate how far you’ve come, and set yourself up for a fresh, energized start.
