It’s that time of year again.
Calendars fill up with performance review meetings, self-evaluations, and feedback conversations that can feel… uncomfortable. Even for confident, capable professionals, reviews often stir up nerves, self-doubt, or defensiveness.
That’s normal.
What makes the biggest difference isn’t the feedback itself — it’s the mindset you bring into the conversation.
Instead of viewing your review as a judgment of your worth or value, try seeing it as a data point to help you grow, not a list of shortcomings.
Performance reviews are meant to be developmental, even when they don’t always feel that way.
Adopt a Growth Mindset
Adopting a growth mindset doesn’t mean you have to agree with everything you hear. It means staying open and curious.
A growth mindset sounds like:
- “What can I learn from this?”
- “How might this feedback help me be more effective?”
- “What’s one small change I could experiment with this year?”
It shifts the goal from defending your past to investing in your future.
How to Receive Feedback More Effectively
Before your review:
- Reflect on what went well and where you want to grow
- Identify skills or behaviors you’d like feedback on
- Remind yourself that feedback is about impact, not intent
During the conversation:
- Listen to understand, not to respond
- Ask clarifying questions instead of pushing back immediately
- Take notes so you don’t rely on memory alone
After the review:
- Look for patterns rather than fixating on a single comment
- Decide what feedback you’ll act on — and how
- Ask for support, resources, or clarity if you need it
The real value of a performance review isn’t the rating or the form — it’s what you do next.
Growth happens when you treat feedback as a tool, not a threat.
If performance reviews leave you feeling stuck, discouraged, or unsure how to move forward, you don’t have to navigate that alone.
Coaching can help you:
- Process feedback without losing confidence
- Identify practical development goals
- Turn reviews into a clear plan for growth
If you’d like support as you reflect, reset, and move forward this year, I’d love to talk.
