Mental Health at Work

by | May 14, 2025 | Blog

As we celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month this May, I wanted to share a few strategies for cultivating work habits that prioritize your well-being.

Take Breaks

I get so immersed in my work that hours can fly by before I realize that I haven’t moved from my desk! I know that taking breaks refreshes your mind and improves your focus when you return to working. So, I set alarms for myself to remind me to take a break and go for a short walk to get my body moving and give my mind some rest.

Establish and Manage Boundaries

I am an Enneagram 2, Considerate Helper, so managing boundaries is challenging for me. When people ask for help or want me to adjust my calendar to accommodate them, my first inclination is to say, “Yes!” I temper this by pausing and reflecting on my capacity and priorities. Re-evaluating helps me to avoid overcommitting and feeling resentful later. When I say “No,” I suggest alternatives as a way of fulfilling my need to help without overwhelming myself.

Cultivate a Positive Work Environment

I am heavily affected by my work environment, and I have resigned from jobs because the work environment was unhealthy for me. A positive work environment not only fosters motivation and creativity but also contributes to a healthier and more fulfilling professional experience. By promoting positivity and gratitude in the workplace, we uplift spirits and enhance mental health for everyone. I prioritize celebrating achievements, expressing appreciation for team efforts, and cultivating a culture where mistakes are valued as opportunities for growth.

Seek Professional Development and Growth

Investing in your professional development not only enhances your skills but also boosts confidence and job satisfaction. Take advantage of training opportunities, develop peer learning circles, or invest in working with a coach. Feeling challenged and fulfilled in your work contributes positively to your overall mental health and sense of accomplishment.
