Embrace the Power of Small Steps

Are you missing out on everyday opportunities for professional growth? Let’s explore a few stories that highlight missed chances:

Joe’s Comfort Zone

During a recent board meeting, after delivering my report from the front of the room, Joe chose to remain seated for his turn. While the atmosphere was supportive and the reports brief, Joe’s decision seemed to stem from public speaking nerves. This was a perfect chance for him to expand his comfort zone and refine his executive presence. Unfortunately, Joe opted to stay within his comfort zone.

Eric’s Comfort Zone

In his second week at a new job, Eric received an email inviting people to volunteer for the safety committee. Feeling unfamiliar with colleagues and doubting his qualifications, Eric declined. Engaging in the committee would have accelerated his integration into the company, broadened his knowledge, and showcased his initiative to leadership. Instead, Eric chose to remain in his comfort zone.

Angela’s Comfort Zone

After completing a project, Angela hesitated to ask for feedback, fearing she might inconvenience others. By seeking feedback, Angela could have gained valuable insights into her strengths, identified areas for improvement, and demonstrated her commitment to growth. Yet, Angela opted to stay within her comfort zone.

Joe, Eric, and Angela missed simple opportunities for professional development that seamlessly fit into their daily routines. These are real stories (with fake names) from clients I have coached. Ironically, each of them had engaged a coach to help accelerate their professional growth. Yet, they were missing the opportunities right in front of them! Imagine if each of them had embraced just one small challenge outside their comfort zone every day. Over time, their comfort zones would have expanded exponentially.

I encourage you to take a moment EVERY DAY to step outside your comfort zone.

Challenge yourself to say “YES” to opportunities that push you beyond your current limits.

Imagine where you could be in a year, with a comfort zone that’s grown to encompass new skills, experiences, and opportunities.
