A few years ago, I caught myself saying something I hear from clients all the time.
“I just need to get through this week… then I can relax.”
The problem? The next week looked exactly the same.
Full calendar. Long to-do list. A few “quick things” that weren’t quick at all.
And without realizing it, I had created a pattern where rest was always something I had to earn… but never quite reached.
Maybe you’ve felt this too.
We tell ourselves:
- I’ll slow down after this project
- I’ll take a break when things calm down
- I just need to push through a little longer
But here’s the truth that’s easy to forget.
Rest is not a reward. It’s a requirement.
When we treat rest like something we have to earn, we end up running on empty more often than we realize. We become less patient. Less focused. Less present.
Not because we’re not capable.
Because we’re depleted.
And the tricky part? High performers are especially good at pushing through that feeling.
So let me offer you a different way to think about this as we head into the long weekend.
What if rest wasn’t something you waited for…
but something you chose?
Not after everything is done.
Not when your inbox is at zero.
Not when you’ve proven you worked hard enough.
Just because you need it.
This doesn’t have to mean a full day off or a big reset.
It might look like:
- Closing your laptop on time, even when there’s more you could do.
- Taking a real lunch break instead of “desk dining.”
- Saying no to something that doesn’t need to be yours.
- Giving yourself a quiet moment before jumping into the next thing.
Small choices. Big impact.
Because when you allow yourself to rest, you don’t fall behind.
You come back sharper. Clearer. More like yourself.
And that version of you? That’s the one your work and your people need most.
As you head into the holiday weekend, notice the urge to “earn it.”
And gently remind yourself…
You don’t have to.
